Society & Environment

The purpose of Society and Environment is to provide students with opportunities to understand and critically analyse the world around them so as they are able to become active citizens, fully able to participate in Australian society.

At Swan View Senior High School, Society and Environment is a compulsory learning area in lower school, and is taught through immersing students in different cultures and time periods, as well as investigating Australian history and culture, and studying and exploring geographical, economic and social issues.


S&E War Memorial In Year 8, students investigate:
•their local area, studying the natural and cultural features of the area
•the history of our modern society from the Middle Ages through to the Industrial Revolution, and
•the culture of Australia’s nearest neighbours, Asia.

Year 9
students participate in studies of:
•Australian Identity, through investigating our history and the development of our culture
•Practical Financial Literacy, and
•Law and Government.




waugylIn Year 10 students’ are prepared to make Upper School choices as well as extended to think on a global scale through the examination of:
•World Environmental Issues
•International Conflict and Cooperation
•An Introduction to Economics, and•Contemporary Social Issues within our society.







As of 2011, all Year 10 students will complete Career Education through Society and Environment.

Upper School students are able to select from several Social Sciences, including Geography, History, Economics and Political and Legal Studies to achieve a WACE certificate. All of the WACE Courses are offered at all three stages.

VET students complete their Career and Enterprise Awareness, and Workplace Learning units through the Society and Environment learning area.
