The Basketball Program is a specialised course of study for students who show particular talent and interest in basketball and related careers. It gives students an opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of Basketball while encouraging a lifelong interest in sport, basketball in particular. The Basketball Program will allow students to develop personal skills including goal setting, team work, sportsmanship, responsibility and confidence, which together, will help create positive work habits for all learning areas. ENTRY CRITERIA
Students may be nominated by parents, a primary school teacher, or coach.
Selection will be on the basis of positive academic and training attitude combined with with the necessary skills and/or potential in basketball.
A practice trial will be held to access the students’ basketball skills. More information will be provided closer to the date.
GOOD STANDING
Students will be expected to maintain the standards of the program including:
- meeting agreed attendance rates
- being a positive member of the school community
- making a sincere effort to produce sound academic performance
FEES
It is expected that students will pay a fee of $100 per year. This will cover costs of visiting specialists, incursions, excursions and subject maintenance.
PATHWAYS
Participation in the program will assist students getting introduced to:
- Playing, Coaching and Umpiring
- Employment in industry of Sport and Recreation
- Entry to TAFE
LINKS
Contact will be made with TAFE so basketball students have opportunities for further education. Contact will be made with Basketball clubs to learn about the running of sporting organisations.
Basketball Program 2011
Will assist in the development of personal skills including goal setting, team-work, risk taking, public speaking, tolerance, leadership and confidence
YEAR 8, 9 AND 10
Four periods each week of class time:
Practical
Basic skills, techniques and tactics for basketball and sports
Cross Training and Core Stability leading to weight training
Theory
Sports Injury Prevention Workshop
Level 1 and 2 Score bench Course Level 1 Referees Accreditation
YEAR 11 AND 12
Practical
Two to three hours per week in advanced skills, techniques and strategies.
Cross Training and Weight Training.
Theory
One to two hours per week in anatomy, physiology, coaching, sports medicine, sports administration, sports psychology and related career paths
Possibility of completing a certificate III in sport and recreation
